Description

Prepare a 1,250-1,500-word essay and evaluate the practice of spiritual disciplines and explain how the spiritual disciplines facilitate the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit.

Before writing this essay, you will need to spend one hour in the spiritual disciplines of silence, solitude, prayer, and meditation on Scripture. During the hour, you will need to be in complete silence (no music, technology, etc.) and complete solitude (no visitors, social media, etc.). You will spend the hour completing a lectio divina, meditating on the Scripture and praying. You are also encouraged to keep a journal to record your experience.

Part 1: The Work of the Believer

Evaluate the hour of solitude, silence, prayer, and meditation on Scripture. Reflect on the experience of the disciplines and different phases of lectio divina as well as how the practice of the spiritual disciplines affected you personally through the hour. Place particular emphasis on what was beneficial to you and what was challenging for you.

Part 2: The Work of the Holy Spirit

Using your experience and at least three academic sources, explain how the practice of the spiritual disciplines facilitates the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit. You should focus generally on the Holy Spirit’s role in sanctification and how the spiritual disciplines serve as means of receiving God’s grace, as well as focusing particularly on how your hour in silence, solitude, prayer, and meditation facilitated the Holy Spirit’s work to form Christ-like character in you.

This essay requires the use of three to five academic sources from class resources or the GCU Library.
