Description

For each part of the Journal assignment, compose a response with a minimum of 250 words.

These journal entries are designed to allow you to see how your own personal experiences or situations are relevant to the kinds of things that sociologists study. You will not be asked to share them with anyone other than the instructor of this class. It is hoped that this will allow you to be open and honest when controversial or personal topics are explored.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

Part I: Marriage and Family Journal (Entry #3)

How were you socialized into your gender role? That is, how did you learn that you were to act in certain ways because you were a girl or because you were a boy? Do you recall your parents telling you some of these expectations? For example, “Big boys don’t cry,” or “Girls don’t play with GI Joe and army toys, they play with dolls.” Did your friends influence you to behave in certain ways because of your gender? Did teachers or relatives play a role in teaching you your gender role either by example or in words? If you have children, do you expect to pass on these same gender roles or do you think you will modify the gender roles you were taught? How and why?

Part II: Marriage and Family Journal (Entry #4)

What have you been taught about premarital and extramarital sex? At this point in your life, do you agree with what you were taught? Have you or do you think you will go against what you were taught if the situation were right? What kind of influences have caused you to disagree with what you were taught or to continue to accept what you were taught?
